Nature conservation AquaZoo Leeuwarden
Together we care for nature
At AquaZoo you will explore the park and walk among the most extraordinary animals. These animals are ambassadors of their own kind in nature, which often have a hard time in their original habitat. In AquaZoo you will therefore see many species with an IUCN-status ranging from 'vulnerable' to 'endangered'. Together we can help these animals, with big, or small steps. On this page you'll discover how AquaZoo is committed to conservation, and you can also find out how you can help.
How do we contribute?

Conservation through cooperation
Many species you see at AquaZoo have "endangered" status. European parks work together to conserve these species. Almost all the animals you see in the park were born in AquaZoo or moved to us from another park. Did you know that some animals are even released back into the wild?

Nature Conservation
Through Stichting Wildlife, we are committed to protecting nature. Stichting Wildlife supports nearly thirty different nature conservation projects around the world, from Friesland to South Africa. Together, we help many animals, from the hedgehog to the polar bear.

Protecting with research
Research is very important for preserving and protecting endangered species and the areas where they live. This way we learn a lot about the animals and how we can best help them. That's why we do our own research and contribute to others' projects.

Indigenous nature
Take a good look around you as you walk through the park. You will see many animal and plant species that do not belong to the collection! These are native species: they originate in the Netherlands and are adapted to our climate. Did you know that many of these species also have "endangered" status?
