Why is research important?

Research is important because it teaches us about the health, behavior and body of animals. The knowledge we gain from this can be used in various conservation projects that help (endangered) species in the best possible way. We also directly measure the health and welfare of the animals living in AquaZoo Leeuwarden and continue to improve our park wherever possible.

Here you can see a wonderful example of how research at AquaZoo supports a project in Argentina to reintroduce giant otters into the wild.

Research is done in three ways

AquaZoo is a great place for researchers. This is because animals are more visible here than in the wild so they can be studied for longer periods of time. We share the knowledge gained in this process with other European zoos during meetings or conferences. With research we work together towards the ultimate goal: nature conservation.

Research by AquaZoo

When we have a question, we start our own research. We then often cooperate with universities, research institutes or other zoos. We help the researcher where necessary. This way we join forces and carry out the research in the best possible way.

Facilitating research

Sometimes a student or an institution would like to answer a research question at AquaZoo. If this question fits with our vision, we are of course happy to help the researcher. We then ensure that the research can be carried out.

Contributing to research

Sometimes researchers ask us if they can use animal material. For example, poop or hair from a certain species, which is then used for DNA research. We gladly donate this material so that the research can be carried out.
