These fish live in the wild only in rivers and lakes in northern Madagascar. The Madagascar tooth carp is threatened with extinction. In the area where these fish live, a lot of forest is being cut down. As a result, the rivers and streams are drying up. So there is less and less habitat for these fish.
Juvenile Madagascar toothcarps live in the shallow water along the banks. They live in groups of about 10 fish together. As they mature, they seek the deeper water. Adult tooth carp usually live alone.
