No ostrich

Greater rheas look a lot like ostriches. Yet they are not directly related to them. They are smaller, have three toes instead of two and have longer wings than ostriches. However, like ostriches, they can run very fast. Nandoes can run as fast as 60 kilometers per hour! And you might not expect it, but in addition to running fast, nandus are also very good swimmers.

Huisman

Once a year, greater rheas lay eggs. The male makes a nest on the ground in which the females lay their eggs. Sometimes there are as many as 80 eggs from several females in one nest. When the eggs are laid, the females leave and the male stays behind to incubate them. When the young nandoes hatch, the father takes care of them.
